Pleas for traffic calming after smash

RESIDENTS have reiterated their pleas for traffic calming measures to be introduced on Bramhall’s roads after a Range Rover ploughed into a wall on Bramhall Lane South.

The 4×4 smashed through the brick wall just before 7am on Monday – barely an hour before hundreds of children began walking to school.

It is not thought that any other vehicle was involved in the incident, or that anyone was injured, but Bramhall resident Greg Billingham insisted that, had it happened during rush hour, someone could have been killed.

“It is a problem and it’s been going on for some time, and there is a serious accident waiting to happen on that particular bend,” said Mr Billingham, 41, who has lived in Bramhall for more than 30 years.

“An hour later and someone could have been killed because quite a few children walk to school that way.

“I don’t walk that way simply because people drive far too fast along that road.”

He added: “It’s a very dangerous place for drivers and pedestrians.

“It is very difficult to police, but it’s far too easy for speeding drivers to get away with it.”

Bramhall Councillor Helen Foster-Grime, who criticised a council initiative to give residents and councillors speed cameras, said it was up to police to take more action against speeders.

“Speeding along Bramhall Lane South has been a serious issue for a long time now, but I still don’t think enough is being done.

“The police are aware of the problem, and it is still a question of resources, but I think it deserves more attention.”

She added: “It is a great concern for all residents, particularly those who walk along Bramhall Lane South and especially those with young children.

“Some mornings there are hundreds of schoolchildren walking along Bramhall Lane South, and it is worrying that these children are walking along the road while people are whizzing past them.

“This accident is a prime example of what could happen, and luckily it was not as serious as it could have been.”
