You would not attempt to play a sport without first checking your equipment was fully functional – for example, if your tennis racquet had loose strings would you still attempt to play?   • Fully working head or tail lights and all lights
  • Signals
  • The firmness of the tyres

Your Own Condition for Driving is just as important as the Car’s

We often neglect our own fitness for driving; however, this is probably the most important factor. If you are not in the right condition to drive, then it does not matter how safe your car is as you will not be able to control it properly.

You need to ask yourself whether you are alert enough to drive as driving can be potentially dangerous and requires full attention, sometimes quick reactions to your surroundings and confident command of the vehicle as well as good judgement. In order to respond to all these points, you need to be awake, alert and concentrating.

If you think you may still be tired, distracted, taking medicine which makes you drowsy or confused you should NOT get behind the wheel. Only when you are able to give your full attention and are properly prepared for the journey ahead should you be confident enough to drive.

It’s Never Too Late to Pick up Safe Driving Skills

Even if you’ve been driving for years (or especially if you have) you could still benefit from learning ways to improve your driving skills for better road safety. When you have driven for many years, you can pick up bad habits and forget a lot of what you were taught for sensible driving. Therefore, allowing an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), the Institute for Advanced Motorists or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to assess you, can ensure that you are driving safely.

If you have recently passed your test, then you can also take the Pass Plus course which provides training on motorways and at night. It is aimed at improving the driver’s awareness and making them a more skilled and safer driver, which is why many car insurance companies see candidates who have completed the course as a better candidate, often resulting in a lower cost for their policy.

It is also a good idea to test yourself by picking up a recent copy of the Highway Code and testing your own knowledge as well as family and friends.

  • Never use your mobile phone while driving
  • Never drink and drive – even one drink can affect your ability behind the wheel
  • Take care to prepare your car for changing weather conditions, using the appropriate measures
  • Always wear a seat belt and make sure children are strapped in too
  • Make sure any animals travelling in the car are contained within the rear of your vehicle
